What this does
All of Communicator’s settings live in one Preferences window, organised into sections by topic. This article maps out what’s where — several sections have their own dedicated article for the detail; this one’s the starting point if you’re not sure which section you need.
What you’ll need
- Communicator open and signed in.
Steps
- Click the Settings icon in the toolbar to open Preferences.
- Find the section you need:
- General — startup behaviour, auto-login, display scaling, default app for
tel:///sip://links, language, diagnostic logging. - Contacts — default double-click action (call vs. chat), daily contact sync, and Google/ Outlook contact integration (see How do I manage my contacts in Communicator?).
- Phone — ringtone, ring volume, call waiting, dialling rules (auto-replace or reformat numbers before dialling), speed dial, codec selection, auto-answer, and call forwarding.
- Audio and Video — device selection and call quality (see Why can’t I hear anything (or why can’t people hear me) on Communicator Desktop? and How do I make a video call in Communicator?).
- Meeting — window and recording behaviour for Communicator Meeting (see How do I schedule and join a Communicator Meeting?).
- Modules — Screen Pop settings for the Agent and Supervisor editions, CRM integration (see How do I connect my CRM to Communicator?), call popup, browser click-to-dial (see How do I install the click-to-dial browser add-on?), and fax defaults.
- Alerts — whether Communicator jumps to the front on an incoming call, how long the call notification stays up, and notification sounds.
- Messaging — where received chat files are saved, chat font, and auto-download size limit for chat file attachments.
- Profiles — set up more than one login profile if you regularly sign in to more than one account.
- Presence — your status and status message, including Busylight hardware and Outlook calendar presence integration (see How do I set my status in Communicator?).
- Advanced — low-level settings such as the Polycom listening port, relevant only if you’re using specific hardware that needs it.
What you should see
Most changes apply immediately; a few (language, display-scaling) need Communicator restarted before they take effect — the app tells you when a restart is required.
Troubleshooting
- A setting doesn’t seem to do anything. Check whether it needs a restart first (language and display-scaling changes both do) before assuming it’s not working.
- You changed a Contacts sync setting and nothing updated. Use Refresh contacts (see How do I manage my contacts in Communicator?) rather than waiting — sync settings control automatic behaviour, not an instant re-sync.
- You need multiple accounts signed in at different times. Turn on Enable multiple login profiles mode under Profiles, then set each one up with its own email, password, and server details.
