What this does

Explains what to expect from your headset with Communicator — whether it’s on the fully-tested list, and what that does (and doesn’t) affect.

What you’ll need

Nothing — just knowing your headset’s make and model, to check against the table below.

Steps

  1. Any headset your computer recognises for audio will work with Communicator for basic calling — plugging into a microphone/speaker jack or pairing over Bluetooth is all that’s needed for sound to work.
  2. Check your headset against this table to see if it’s one we’ve specifically tested for button controls (answer, hang up, mute, and volume from the headset itself, not just your computer):
Plantronics Yealink EPOS Sennheiser VT
Blackwire 3310 BH76 (with Charging Stand UC) DW 10 X300 BT Duo
Blackwire 3315 BH74 Teams 6300 ENCx2 USB
Blackwire 3220 BH71 Workstation Pro 8200 ENCx2 Duo USB
Blackwire 3320 BH70 Dual
Blackwire 7225 WDD60
SAVI 8200 WH62
SAVI 8210 WH64 Dual UC
BT600 WH64 Hybrid Dual UC
C725 BT51
  1. If your headset is on the list, its buttons should work for answering, ending, and muting calls without touching your keyboard or mouse.
  2. If it isn’t on the list, it will still work for audio — you’ll just use Communicator’s on-screen controls (or your keyboard/mouse) instead of the headset’s own buttons.

What you should see

Calls play through your headset, and — if your model is on the list — the headset’s own buttons answer, end, and mute calls.

Troubleshooting

  • Your headset isn’t on the list and you’re not sure it’s working. Check Why can’t I hear anything (or why can’t people hear me) on Communicator Desktop? first — most “no sound” issues come down to the audio device selection in Preferences, not the headset itself.
  • The headset buttons don’t do anything. That’s expected for a model not on the tested list — audio still works, but button integration is only confirmed for the headsets above. Use Communicator’s on-screen call controls instead.
  • You’re buying a new headset and want one with full button support. Choose from the table above for the best-tested experience.
