What this does

Places a call from Communicator — on your computer or in the Communicator GO app on your mobile — to a colleague’s extension or to any outside number. If you know Communicator on your computer as “the softphone”, this is the article you want.

What you’ll need

Steps

On your computer (Communicator):

  1. Click the phone icon in the toolbar to open the phone panel. A green dot beside it means you’re connected and can call; a red dot means you can’t — see Troubleshooting.
  2. Type the number using the on-screen keypad or your keyboard. For an outside number, enter it exactly as you’d dial it from a mobile. Hold 0 to enter + for an international number.
  3. Click Dial (or press Enter).

To call a colleague instead, type their name in the search box at the top, then click the phone icon on their contact, or right-click their name and choose Call. You can also drag a contact onto the phone panel.

  1. To end the call, click the red hang up button.
  2. If the call is answered on a different device than you expected, check the phone mode drop-down in the phone panel. Softphone uses your computer’s audio. Deskphone makes your desk phone place the call, so you pick it up on the handset. Mobile App rings your Communicator GO app. Pick the one you want before you dial.

On your mobile (Communicator GO):

  1. Open Communicator GO and tap the Phone tab (the handset icon at the bottom).
  2. Tap the number on the dial pad, or start typing a colleague’s name — matching contacts appear above the keypad as you type.
  3. Tap the green call button.
  4. To end the call, tap the red hang up button.

You can also call straight from Contacts: open the contact and tap their number or the phone icon.

Calling from a web page or another app on your computer: see How do I install the click-to-dial browser add-on? (click-to-dial add-on) and How do I use Quick Call in Communicator? (Quick Call shortcut).

What you should see

The call window opens with the name or number, then a timer once the other side answers. On your computer, the phone panel shows the number you dialled; in GO, the call screen fills the display.

Troubleshooting

  • The dot next to the phone icon is red, or Dial does nothing. Communicator isn’t connected to your phone system. Check your internet connection first, then sign out and back in. If it stays red, see Why can’t I make calls on Communicator?.
  • The call connects but nobody can hear anything. Check which microphone and speaker Communicator is using: click the headset icon in the phone panel and pick your device. See Why can’t I hear anything (or why can’t people hear me) on Communicator Desktop?.
  • My desk phone rang instead of my computer. Your phone mode is set to Deskphone. Switch it to Softphone in the phone panel drop-down.
  • Nothing happens when I tap call in GO. Check the app shows you as signed in and online. If you’re on mobile data, make sure the app is allowed to use it in your phone’s settings — see How do I set up Communicator GO on my phone?.
  • I want to hide my number for this call. In the phone panel on your computer, open the caller ID options and pick the next call only choice before you dial.
