What this does

Adds a second person to a call you’re already on, so the three of you can talk together from your desk phone. For meetings with more people, or with video and screen sharing, use Communicator Meeting instead (see How do I schedule and join a Communicator Meeting?).

What you’ll need

Steps

  1. While you’re on the first call, press Conference (on some phones it’s a soft key labelled Conf, or a key with a three-person icon). The first caller is put on hold.
  2. Dial the second person’s number — an extension or an outside number — and press Dial (or the green call key).
  3. When they answer, tell them you’re bringing them into a call, then press Conference again. All three of you are now connected.
  4. To end the three-way call, hang up. On most handsets the other two are disconnected as well; some let you press Split to go back to separate calls, or Manage to drop one person.

If the second person doesn’t answer: press Cancel (or End) and then Resume to go back to your first caller.

Joining two calls you already have (one on hold, one active): press Conference and then the line key of the held call, instead of dialling a new number.

What you should see

The screen shows both callers on one line, usually labelled “Conference”. Each person’s number or name is listed while the call is joined.

Troubleshooting

  • I can’t find a Conference key. It may only appear as a soft key once you’re on a call — look along the bottom of the screen. Every supported handset has one, though the label varies.
  • Pressing Conference dropped the first caller. Use the exact order above: Conference, dial, wait for answer, Conference again. If it keeps happening, contact us with your handset model.
  • The other two got cut off when I hung up. That’s how a handset conference works — the person who set it up holds it together. If you need to leave a call running, use Communicator Meeting (see How do I schedule and join a Communicator Meeting?).
  • I need four or more people. Handset conferencing is three people. For more, use Communicator Meeting, or ask us about a conference room number on your phone system.
