What this does
Lets you pause a call on your desk phone so the caller waits with hold music while you do something else — check a detail, take a second call, or ask a colleague a question — then pick the call back up where you left it.
What you’ll need
- A desk phone registered to your extension, set up by us (see Connect your new Bluehubcloud handset).
- Nothing else — hold is built into every supported handset.
Steps
Putting a call on hold:
- While you’re on the call, press Hold. On most phones it’s a key with a pause symbol or a soft key labelled Hold.
- The caller hears hold music. Your phone shows the call as held, usually with a flashing line key or a “Hold” label on screen.
Taking the call back:
- Press Resume (or press Hold again, or the flashing line key). You’re reconnected.
Taking a second call while one is on hold:
- When a second call rings, press Answer. The first caller stays on hold.
- To swap between them, press the line key for the call you want, or use the Swap soft key if your phone has one. The other caller goes on hold automatically.
- To end one call and go back to the other, hang up the active call, then press Resume on the held one.
Sending a held call somewhere else: if the caller needs someone else, transfer them instead of holding (see How do I transfer a call on my desk phone?). To park the call so any colleague can pick it up from their own phone, see How do I pick up a call that’s ringing or parked somewhere else?.
What you should see
The screen shows the call as held and the line key flashes. When you resume, the timer for the call carries on from where it was.
Troubleshooting
- The caller says they heard silence, not music. Hold music is set on your phone system, not the handset. Contact us and we’ll check it.
- I can’t find a Hold key. Every supported handset has one, though it may be a soft key that only appears once you’re on a call. Look along the bottom of the screen during a call.
- I pressed Hold and the call dropped. The call may have timed out on hold, or the caller hung up. If it keeps happening, contact us with the time of the call.
- I need to hold for a long time. Consider parking the call instead (see How do I pick up a call that’s ringing or parked somewhere else?), so a colleague can pick it up if you’re delayed.
