What this does

Lets you answer a call from your own phone even though it’s ringing — or waiting on hold — at a different extension. There are two separate situations this covers: a phone that’s actively ringing nearby (call pickup), and a call a colleague has deliberately put aside for anyone to grab (call parking).

What you’ll need

  • Your phone or Communicator, with Call Pickup enabled for your extension (ask your admin if you’re not sure).
  • For a ringing phone: it needs to be in the same call group as yours, or you need its extension number.
  • For a parked call: the parking position number a colleague tells you (or that’s announced when they park it).

Steps

Answering a phone that’s ringing nearby:

  1. If the ringing phone shares your call group, dial *8 from your own phone. It picks up whichever call in your group is ringing — if more than one phone is ringing at once, you won’t get to choose which call comes through.
  2. To pick up a specific extension regardless of call group, dial *88 followed by that extension’s number instead.

Answering a call that’s been parked for you:

  1. A colleague parks a call by transferring it to a parking extension — they’ll tell you which parking position it landed on (e.g. 701), or the system announces it back to them automatically.
  2. From any phone, dial that parking position number to pick the call straight up.

What you should see

Dialling *8 or *88 + extension connects you to the ringing call immediately. Dialling a parking position number connects you to whoever’s been waiting there — if nobody dials it in time, the call automatically returns to whoever parked it (or wherever your admin has set it to go).

Troubleshooting

  • Dialling *8 or *88 does nothing. Call Pickup needs to be turned on for your extension first — check with your admin.
  • *8 picked up the wrong call. *8 grabs whatever’s ringing in your call group with no way to choose between multiple ringing calls — use *88 with the specific extension number instead if you need to be precise.
  • The parked call isn’t there anymore. Parked calls don’t wait forever — if nobody picks one up in time it gets redirected automatically, so check with whoever parked it.
