What this does

Lets you pause a call recording while sensitive details are read out — a card number, a password, a personal matter — and resume it afterwards, so the recording stays useful without capturing what shouldn’t be kept. You can also start a recording on demand for a call that isn’t recorded automatically.

What you’ll need

  • A desk phone registered to your extension, set up by us (see Connect your new Bluehubcloud handset).
  • Call recording set up on your extension or your phone system. If it isn’t available on your Bluehubcloud PBX, contact us and we’ll set it up for you.

A note on recording calls in Australia: the rules on recording differ by state and territory, and you generally need to tell the other party. Your business is responsible for how it records and stores calls — if you’re unsure, check with your administrator before you rely on any of this.

Steps

Pausing a recording that’s already running:

  1. While you’re on the call, dial *90. The recording pauses; the call carries on.
  2. When the sensitive part is over, dial *91. Recording resumes.

Starting a recording on demand:

  1. While on a call that isn’t being recorded, dial *159. Recording starts from that point and stops when the call ends.

Listening back: your administrator can find the recording on your phone system. From a desk phone, dial *170 followed by a number from 1 to 9 to hear one of your last nine recordings (1 is the most recent) — if that code is enabled for your extension.

What you should see

Nothing changes for the caller — both of you keep talking. Some handsets show a brief message when a code is accepted. The recording, when played back, has a gap where you paused it.

Troubleshooting

  • *90 doesn’t seem to do anything. The call may not be being recorded in the first place, or the pause codes may not be enabled on your phone system. Contact us.
  • I need recordings paused automatically for payments. Ask us — this can be set up on your phone system so it happens without dialling anything.
  • Are calls from Communicator recorded the same way? Communicator has its own record button (see How do I record a call in Communicator?). The star codes above are for the desk phone.
  • Where do recordings go? They stay on your phone system and your administrator controls access. Contact us if you need one retrieved.
